all of history appears as wreckage from the stand-point of redemption. this was, perhaps, a consoling thought at the time, but it derives from a quite different perspective from that of the historian (the backward-looking prophet) who is always a part of a specific historical present and relates through it only to specific pasts. this storm is what we call progress.
